Lemon Lavender Rose Jelly – A Floral Twist on Classic Preserves

    August 14, 2015 /

It feels like forever since I’ve done any canning. (Though in reality, I did make a garlic dipping sauce yesterday – remind me to blog that!). Honestly, it has been a while. I’ve been caught up in working outside the home, commuting an hour each way, which doesn’t leave much time in the kitchen. With our quarterly food swap coming up, I wanted something new to bring to the table. So, I pulled out my canning cookbooks and started browsing for inspiration. In Better Homes and Gardens 2014 Canning (Special Interest), I came across a Lemon Lavender Jelly that sounded amazing. Being me, I had to tweak it. First, I…

    Spaghetti Western Steak Rub

    March 13, 2015 /

Spaghetti Western Inspiration As those gritty, sun-baked tales of outlaws and loner gunslingers stormed the screen in the 60’s, I wanted a steak rub that brought back the same bold, smoky punch to your dinner table. And because so many of these movies were actually filmed in Italy (hence the name “Spaghetti Western”), I wanted to make sure that the steak rub acknowledged that. These vintage-style “movie posters” capture that wild frontier spirit, and the one-of-a-kind flavor behind this rub. Why This Rub Works This Spaghetti Western Steak Rub perfectly balances smoky, savory, and slightly sweet. A hearty base of chili powders – both Ancho and New Mexico – lays…

Crème fraîche and Pork Al Latte Review

    March 1, 2015 /

YouTube – I could get lost for hours in the food videos there. And, actually, I have. It started innocently enough – a video for homemade crème fraîche. Which, by the way, is super easy and tastes way better than sour cream. And by super easy, I mean this:   I didn’t stop at the crème fraîche, though. I kept watching videos. Eventually I came across this one: Chef John is amazingly funny. I know because I’ve watched about a zillion of his videos. This one uses crème fraîche – which is amazing since I have a jar in my fridge. I made this for dinner last night and it is AMAZING.…

    Cake in a Mug

    February 19, 2015 /

I generally don’t keep ready-made sweets in the house because when I do, they just get eaten and I no longer have ready-made sweets in the house. It’s a vicious cycle. However, I do get cravings, as does the man-child, and I need a quick fix for that. We’ve played around off and on with the brownie in a mug cakes. I recently purchased a product called “Mugging” at the grocery store – which works, but is a bit high for my budget. Duncan Hines to the rescue! This is super, super easy, people. Just mix together a box of cake mix of your choice (I currently have yellow and…
